Master of Visual Arts

The Master of Visual Arts degree suits both artists who want to deepen their understanding of the contemporary art world and graduates who are changing disciplines and wish to pursue and expand their artistic and creative capabilities.

You will extend and refine your visual literacy skills and ability to critically analyse artworks and understand key concepts in contemporary visual art. 

The degree at Griffith encourages you to explore ideas in contemporary visual culture and develop your studio art practice to produce a significant body of work for exhibition.

By joining a community of expert art practitioners, you will be encouraged to experiment and stretch the boundaries of innovation across a broad range of media, including drawing, jewellery, painting, photography, print-making and sculpture.

Work-integrated learning

Learning within the visual arts is situated around work-integrated learning. 

From the commencement of the program until graduation, students work and practice as visual artists. 

They are expected to seek commissions and grants, publish their work through exhibitions and work out of personal studios.

Academic background and requirement

If you do not meet the academic entry criteria, you may be able to study the Masters Qualifying Program (9354) and qualify for entry into this Masters's degree.

To be eligible for admission to the Master of Visual Arts, applicants must:

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised University with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale)
  • OR hold a Bachelor's degree or a Graduate Certificate (or higher) in a cognate discipline from a recognised University with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale) - these students will be eligible for 40 credit points of advanced standing
  • OR hold a Bachelor's Honours degree or a Graduate Diploma (or higher) in a cognate discipline from a recognised University with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale) - these students will be eligible for 80 credit points of advanced standing
  • OR have a combination of alternative admission criteria such as formal, informal and non-formal learning deemed to be equivalent to either of the above - these students may be eligible for 10 to 80 credit points of advanced standing
  • AND provide a brief personal statement of 2-3 paragraphs outlining the following:
    1. Why do you want to study a Master of Visual Arts and
    2. A description of the research and/or practical projects that you would like to undertake during the study with reference to the courses and topics in the program that attract your interest.

Griffith College delivers the Masters Qualifying Program for Griffith University to provide you with the knowledge, values and skills required to complete studies at the postgraduate level in Australia successfully.

Once you complete all four courses in the Masters Qualifying Program and meet other relevant entry criteria, you can progress to a Griffith University Masters Program of Study.
