Overview

Master of Teaching (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) at UOW is for university graduates from non-teaching courses who want to become secondary school teachers (Years 7 to 12).

Upon completing this degree, you will obtain a formal qualification making you eligible to teach specialised subject areas to students aged 13 to 18 in public, religious and private schools.

This program focuses on building teaching skills through a professional experience immersion program in your first session and regular professional experience periods throughout the degree.

You will complete 60 days of professional experience (PEX), including the option to complete one PEX in a rural or remote area of NSW.

There are also opportunities to undertake international immersion programs that, while not counted as a PEX, allow you to travel overseas, visit schools and develop your understanding of people and cultures.

Online teaching, forums, podcasts, video-streamed lectures, on-campus tutorials, and in-school activities will support your learning.

You will benefit from the expertise of local teachers and a range of workshops to develop your skills in communication, technology-enhanced learning, working with parents, designing assessments and conducting school-based research.

During your degree, you will explore teaching and learning concepts to build your professional skills in your selected teaching areas.

Teaching areas include English, Science, Visual Arts, Modern or Ancient History, Geography, Society and Culture or Aboriginal Studies, Legal Studies Business Studies or Economics.

The methods offered are subject to demand, meaning that not all methods are guaranteed to be offered yearly.

Academic background and requirement

Entry requirements include:

  • An undergraduate degree equivalent to a three-year Australian bachelor's degree with a minimum credit average grade meets the requirements of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for teaching in primary schools. The School of Education must assess the NESA requirements before submitting your application.
  • A valid IELTS is required if the degree was not completed in English from Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Canada and the Republic of Ireland.
  • Teaching Questionnaire meeting the non-academic selection criteria.

Students who have studied overseas may be required to meet additional requirements set by the NSW Education Standards Authority to qualify as teachers in NSW.

All teachers must be accredited to work in a NSW school or centre-based early childhood service. Learn about the requirements for getting accredited.

NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA):

Your undergraduate degree must contain at least one year of full-time study (generally eight semester-long units) in a key learning area (KLA) or a combination of KLAs from the primary school curriculum.

KLAs include:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science and Technology
  • Human Society and its Environment
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
  • Creative Arts.

At UOW, you will be required to meet the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Requirements and qualify for either ONE teaching area (double method) or TWO single teaching areas (single method).

Put simply, double methods are broad study areas that are taught across years 7-12, such as English, Science and Visual Arts.

Single methods are narrower fields of study that must be paired with other disciplines, such as History and Business Studies.
