Master of Arts - History

This graduate program at Carleton University is designed to facilitate the development of methodological and critical skills required to pursue history at a high academic level. 

The faculty offers excellent opportunities for supervising work in Canadian History, Ancient and Medieval history, Early Modern history, Modern Europe, the Atlantic world (especially Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America), South East Asia, and U.S. History. 

Students are involved in every facet of academic life, from organizing the annual Underhill Graduate Student Colloquium to hosting social events sponsored by the History Graduate Students’ Association.

Collaborative specializations in African Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Digital Humanities, as well as Data Science, are also available.

This program has two pathway Options: Research Essay, Thesis

If your first language is not English, you can prove your language proficiency by:

  • presenting one of the official Language Proficiency (ESL) test scores as defined in the table below;
  • showing that you have completed ESLA 1900 or ESLA 1905 at Carleton University with a final grade of B- or higher; or
  • present official certification (transcripts) that you have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree within the past three years in a university in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, or any country in which the primary language is English, where the language of instruction in the relevant educational institution was English, and the language of instruction in their most recently completed undergraduate or graduate degree was English.

Note: Letters from your universities stating the medium of instruction is English are not acceptable.

  • All candidates are required to demonstrate a reading knowledge of a language other than English, the choice to depend upon the field of the candidate’s thesis or research. For research projects dealing with sources not in English, a reading knowledge of the appropriate language will be required before acceptance into the program.

Academic background and requirement

  • The minimum requirement for admission to the master's program is an Honours bachelor's degree (or the equivalent) with at least B+ average.
  • The Department offers no qualifying-year program; applicants with a general (three-year) degree may be considered for admission into the fourth year of Carleton's B.A. (Honours) program.
