Overview

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

The School of Music at the University of Ottawa is one of the country's leading music schools. It is the ideal place to nurture your passion for all things musical and to pursue the rigorous training needed for an active and successful career in the field. It maintains close ties with renowned institutions such as the National Arts Center (NAC) and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. The program boasts state-of-the-art music facilities and internationally recognized professors who perform around the globe and publish in leading academic journals. It is a full-service music school offering programs in performance, composition, music education, piano pedagogy, theory and musicology.

Although any of the programs can pave the way for a career in education, musicology, music journalism or arts administration, the Bachelor of Music (BMus) is designed specifically for students wishing to become career musicians. Admission to the BMus therefore requires that you audition on your main instrument and demonstrate an intermediate or advanced level. In addition, the University of Ottawa is one of the only institutions in the country to offer the possibility of combining the BMus program in performance with a major in science.

This program is offered in English and in French.

Music Education includes guitar, harp, percussion, piano, saxophones, strings, voice, winds and brass.

Academic Requirements

Admission to the Bachelor of Music (BMus) program requires that you audition on your main instrument and demonstrate an intermediate or advanced level.

Required documents

Official transcripts must be printed and stamped with an official seal and sent by the issuing institution. The university also accept copies certified by a notary, lawyer or commissioner of oaths.
Depending on your academic background and intended program, you might have to submit other documents to complete your application, such as a resumé or cover letter.
As part of the admission process, Ontario universities sometimes ask undergraduate applicants who were educated outside Canada to submit their official transcripts directly to World Education Services (WES) in order to determine the Canadian equivalencies of their academic credentials.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available
Depending on your language test scores, you might be admitted with language conditions. You may be required to enrol in one or two English-as-a-second-language courses during first year or complete the English Intensive Program (EIP).

The English Intensive Program is a great way to improve your English language skills and prepare to enrol at the University of Ottawa. You might have to enrol in and pass the EIP before you can start your program. If you pass the most advanced EIP course (ESL 0140) with a final grade of B or higher, you will not have to pass one of the above language tests.
