Master of Arts in Linguistics

Located in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, SFU Linguistics is a place where diverse methodologies and theoretical perspectives are combined to create innovative approaches to the study of language. Graduate students in our program engage in challenging coursework and enjoy unique research opportunities while working toward either an MA or a PhD degree. Graduates of our program have pursued further studies (PhD and postdoctoral positions) at institutions worldwide, including Yale University, Northwestern University, University of Edinburgh, Massachussets Institute of Technology, University of Amsterdam, and University of Toronto. Graduating PhD students have also attained lecturer and faculty positions at California State University, University of Salzburg, University of Cologne, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and others.

Academic Requirements

For admission to the MA program, students must be able to demonstrate an adequate background in linguistics. Students having little or no academic preparation in linguistics will not be admitted to the program. In most cases, we require applicants to have completed significant course work covering core areas in linguistics. These requirements include an introductory course in linguistics, courses in phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology and semantics.
