Linguistics is the scientific study of language. As linguists, students study the formal properties of language, how it evolves, and how it is used in social situations.
At least six courses (24 credit hours) are required for the MA. Normally students are expected to complete the degree in six semesters (two academic years).
The first year is usually devoted to coursework, and the second to the thesis.
The Department of Linguistics at Simon Fraser University offers graduate work leading to MA and PhD degrees.
Graduate students take courses, have opportunities to work as teaching assistants and/or research assistants, and engage in research activities that will lead to the completion of a thesis or dissertation.
Research in linguistics at SFU is characterized by interdisciplinarity, breadth in research methodology, and diversity in theoretical perspective.
Graduate students work closely with faculty on research projects and often collaborate on joint publications.

For admission to the MA program, students must be able to demonstrate an adequate background in linguistics. Applicants having little or no academic preparation in linguistics will not be admitted to the program.
In most cases, SFU requires applicants to have completed significant coursework covering core areas in linguistics.
These requirements include an introductory course in linguistics, and courses in phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology and semantics.
In exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to admit students who do not meet the above requirements. SFU understands that courses like the above may not be available at all universities.
In this case, the admissions committee may stipulate a number of courses that must be taken by the student beyond the basic requirements for the degree.
Students admitted under such circumstances should expect to take an additional year or two to complete their programs.
