Overview

Bachelor of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries

Combine the theoretical and practical lab experience that provides the background to pursue post-graduate studies and public- and private-sector employment in the wildlife or fisheries professions.

Learn about natural resources management, chemistry, ecology, biology, genetics, physics, soil science, forest plant systems and botany in your first two years.

Delve into a wide range of topics in your third and fourth years:

  • ornithology and mammalogy
  • animal diseases and parasites
  • environmental impact assessment
  • ethics
  • Indigenous perspectives on land and resource management
  • wildlife, fisheries and watershed management

The BSc Wildlife and Fisheries degree at UNBC is administered by the Ecosystem Science and Management Department and is one of the very few degrees of its kind in Canada.

The degree provides students with a solid foundation in wildlife and fisheries biology with considerable indoor and outdoor laboratory experience

It also exposes students to an integrated approach to resource issues confronting today's professionals.

The relatively small class sizes in upper-division courses provide an ideal learning environment. Faculty teaching the courses for this degree are of extremely high calibre – many of them have won UNBC teaching and research awards.

Learning does not stop in the classroom. UNBC has a Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society (TWS) and the only Student Chapter of TWS that emphasizes fisheries and wildlife.

The UNBC Fish & Wildlife Student Chapter of TWS exposes students to issues and activities related to wildlife and fisheries that go beyond course learning.

Currently, a student taking all of the courses needed to complete the BSc Wildlife and Fisheries at UNBC should meet the education requirements for eligibility as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) in BC, The Wildlife Society of North America's Certified Wildlife Biologist Program, and the American Fisheries Society's Professional Certification Program.
