Master of Biotechnology

Place yourself at the forefront of innovation, engineering organisms to address issues of food security, disease and climate change with the ANU Master of Biotechnology.

Study alongside leading researchers who work on issues of global importance in areas of biochemistry and molecular biology in the biomedical, animal and plant sciences.

You will also consider the social and ethical impacts of biotechnological research.

The Canberra location means you will learn about the work done by Australia’s largest government employers in biotechnology.

Completing a Master of Biotechnology (Advanced), with a research component, can also lead to a PhD.

Learning Outcomes

ANU College programs deliver pathways to ANU designed to help you successfully transition to undergraduate or postgraduate study. 

Academic English Preparation
Academic English Preparation (AEP) is a 10-week program focused on English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. 

AEP is designed to equip international students with skills and knowledge needed to live and work in Australia, and to successfully transition to other courses at ANUC. 

To enrol in AEP, you must have an IELTS of 5.0 (minimum 4.5 in each band) or an overall TOEFL IBT of 40 with a minimum of 12 in writing. 

Once enrolled, you must achieve a score of 60 per cent or more to successfully complete AEP. No additional IELTS is required to progress to Foundation Studies or ANU Access. 
ANU Access
ANU Access is a 10-week intensive program with a strong focus on academic English. 

To be eligible for ANU Access, you must have an overall IELTS of 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5) or an overall TOEFL IBT of 68 with a minimum of 18 in writing

A range of other English language tests are also accepted. Once you successfully complete the program you can enter your degree at ANU.


Academic background and requirement

Applicants must present a Bachelor degree or international equivalent

  • with a minimum GPA of at least 5.0/7.0
  • with at least 8 courses in a cognate discipline, which must also have a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0.
  • the program also has a chemistry/biochemistry pre-requisite which requires a minimum of 2 courses of undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry

The GPA requirement for this program must be met by both the program as a whole, as well as by the 8 courses in a cognate discipline. 

Where more than 8 cognate courses have been completed by the applicant, ANU will take the best 8 courses when assessing the cognate GPA.

Applications for course credit

Applicants with a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 24 units (one semester) of credit.

Applicants with a Graduate Diploma or Bachelor degree with Honours in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 48 units (one year) of credit.
