Overview

Bachelor of Arts (Sociology)

This degree will explore social life, social change and social problems. 

You will develop an understanding of the complexities of contemporary social life; addressing social problems and examining issues of ethnicity, globalisation, popular culture and social movements.

You will develop the critical and creative thinking skills to identify trends, structures and social issues that emerge from cultural, political and economic change. 

You will graduate with a sound knowledge of:

  • Social theory

  • Policy
  • Family
  • Global society
  • Social movements

This degree allows you to select two majors ensuring you graduate with an in-depth knowledge of areas of interest to you.

 You can choose your second major from the following:

  • Languages (French/Italian/Japanese)

In addition to your two majors, you will also complete four courses from a selected list of minors (also from the above list), and two elective courses in an area of your interest.

This degree increases your employment prospects by enabling you to gain expertise in two different areas of interest.

 This degree equips you with in-depth knowledge of the complexities of contemporary social life; addressing social problems and examining issues of ethnicity, globalisation, popular culture and social movements.

You will have opportunities to engage with industry partners and organisations as part of your studies through the optional Professional Directions Program.

There is also an opportunity to study a portion of your degree overseas, as part of the University’s Hawke Ambassador Volunteer Experience Program (full semester) or Hawke Professional Experience Program (part semester). 

As part of this program, you will volunteer with an international non-government organisation (NGO), usually in an overseas destination.

You could continue your studies with a Master of Teaching with one major and one minor Learning Area.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

Successful completion of the Centre for English Language at the University of South Australia (CELUSA) Academic English Program: Level 4 (AE4)

 

If you do not meet the English language entry requirements, you can successful completion of the Centre for the English Language at the University of South Australia (CELUSA) Academic English Program. 

 
If they successfully complete the AE program at an appropriate level, students applying to these institutions will not need to take IELTS or any other English language test. 

Depending on their English level upon commencement of the AE program and their required IELTS score for further studies, students will study for between 10 and 40 weeks.

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 program or an equivalent program in your home country or a recognised Pathway or Foundation Studies Program.

If you are an international student studying Year 12 in Australia you need to apply via the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC).

Successful completion of the Pre-University Certificate OR High School Diploma

 

Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements and essential requirements for admission:

 

Recent secondary education
Meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C- or equivalent
AND

  • Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and achieved a competitive Selection Rank (ATAR), or
  • Complete secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
  • Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points

Applicants who have not achieved the Selection Rank required for automatic selection may be selected for any remaining places based on the grades of their year 12 subjects.

OR
Higher education study

  • Complete or partly complete a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution, or
  • Complete at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the undergraduate level or above

OR
Vocational Education and Training (VET)

  • Complete an award from a registered training organisation at Certificate IV or above

Work and life experience

  • Qualify for Special Entry, or
  • Complete a UniSA Foundation Studies program or equivalent, or
  • Hold completed secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE obtained more than 2 years in the past
