Overview

Master of Computer Science

This masters by coursework degree is designed to meet the demand for computing experts in an ever evolving digital industry landscape.

Students will be exposed to contemporary computer science techniques and technologies with a strong focus on practical application of computing and theory, process and principles. 

It is also relevant to those seeking to enter the IT profession who have no previous experience in the computing discipline. 

The curriculum and capstone components of the course are heavily influenced by industry and offer students the opportunity to apply their expertise in authentic and real-world situations.

Work Experience option

Students have the opportunity to seek a semester long Work Integrated Learning placement with an industry partner relevant to the ICT discipline.

Attendance requirements

Students are required to complete a placement which is equivalent to one semester of full-time study. Whilst attendance is negotiated with the WIL host organisation, typically students will be expected to attend 5 days a week for 12-13 weeks.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

The Academic English Program (AEP) is designed for students who plan to study at an Australian university or who are interested in developing academic reading, writing, listening and communication skills. 

It is taught in 10 week terms, with start dates approximately every five weeks.

It is designed to improve your English and study skills, enabling you to be successful in your diploma and PQP courses at ECC as well as under or postgraduate programs at ECU. 

No further English testing is required (except for Nursing and other higher English course requirements). Therefore, with a minimum of 65%, you are able to graduate to the next AEP level or your designated course.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate their English language proficiency before they enter an ECC program.

English language proficiency can be determined by submitting evidence of Year 12 studies or IELTS Test scores, or Pearson English Test scores or equivalent as shown in the table below.

Academic background and requirement

  • Bachelor degree; or
  • Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience.

Special entry may be considered for students with a cognate first degree (or with appropriate experience) who can apply for a reduced course duration:

1.5 years full time (3 years part time) – 180 credit points

Admission is based on:

Bachelor degree in a related discipline*, or
Bachelor degree in any discipline, plus five years relevant work experience^, or
Graduate Certificate of Computer Science (or equivalent), or
Evidence of academic capability judged to be equivalent.

*Related discipline refers to any computing/ICT-related discipline
^Relevant work experience constitutes Senior/Managerial positions to be approved by the Course Coordinator.

Pathway:

The Post-Graduate Qualifying Program (PQP) is a one semester non-award program designed for students who already have tertiary qualifications but have not qualified for direct entry into master’s degrees at Edith Cowan University (ECU). 

The program will equip students with the knowledge, skills and English Language Proficiency (ELP) for entry into master’s degrees in the School of Science (Computing and Security) at ECU.
