Master of Medical Laboratory Science - Management

Develop specialist skills in a chosen field of medical laboratory science, demonstrate your analytical and problem-solving skills and learn to apply contemporary theory to current practice.

The ability to carry out research in medical laboratory science is a skill in high demand by industry. Medical laboratory scientists are facing new challenges as technologies evolve and diagnostic services change. 

Top-level evaluative and management skills are in demand along with specialised skills in research and development. The Master of Medical Laboratory Science equips you with the skills to make the most of these opportunities. 

This programme is open to all medical laboratory scientists (New Zealand registration and practising certificate are required). There's an opportunity to follow either a management or a specialised scientist pathway.

What you study

You need to complete a total of 240 points, including 120 points from advanced-level courses and a thesis of 120 points. For your thesis you complete a sustained piece of research in a specialised area of medical laboratory science; a unique offering in today’s competitive job market.

You can follow either a management or a specialist scientist pathway.

Management pathway:

Graduates gain the ability to critically analyse strategic and operational processes and examine the evidential base underpinning health policy development.

Academic Requirements

An applicant must:

  • Have completed the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science with a B (70%-74%) grade average or higher in courses at level 7, or equivalent
  • Be registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (MSCNZ)
  • Hold a current Practising Certificate as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, issued by the MSCNZ

AUT International House is an English language school next to the AUT City Campus. It is part of AUT and offers a range of qualifications, including GIE – the AUT university entrance and preparation programme.

On-campus academic English courses (GIE and IELTS Full-time) at International House:

1) GIE (academic preparation and university entrance programme)

The GIE programme prepares you for entry into most AUT programmes (some health and education programmes require IELTS).

Entry requirement:

IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading and Writing and no less than 5.0 in Speaking and Listening

2) IELTS Full-time

Entry requirement:

There is a different entry requirement for each level of the IELTS course.

  • Level 1: you need IELTS 4.5 with a minimum band score of 4.0
  • Level 2: you need IELTS 5.5 with a minimum band score of 5.0
