Master of Psychotherapy

The Master of Psychotherapy programme at AUT is for beginning psychotherapists or students who wish to become psychotherapists.

This degree enables you to apply for interim registration with the Psychotherapists Board of Aotearoa New Zealand and applicant membership of the New Zealand Psychotherapists Association. 

Master of Psychotherapy (Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy) graduates are eligible to join the New Zealand Association of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists as student members and once qualified will be eligible to register with the Psychotherapists Board of Aotearoa New Zealand.

 

What you study

You complete several psychotherapy courses and research methods courses to prepare you for your research dissertation in the final part of the programme. 

At the heart of the programme is the dissertation, your chance to advance professional knowledge in the area of psychotherapy.

The programme includes participation in clinical work at placement and the campus psychotherapy clinic. 

It also requires the undertaking of personal psychotherapy. 

There is an additional fee for individual supervision in the second year of the programme.

Language courses at AUT International House:

AUT International House is an English language school next to the AUT City Campus. It is part of AUT and offers a range of qualifications, including GIE – the AUT university entrance and preparation programme.

On-campus academic English courses (GIE and IELTS Full-time) at International House:

1) GIE (academic preparation and university entrance programme)

The GIE programme prepares you for entry into most AUT programmes (some health and education programmes require IELTS).

Entry requirement:

IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading and Writing and no less than 5.0 in Speaking and Listening

2) IELTS Full-time

Entry requirement:

There is a different entry requirements for each level of the IELTS course.

  • Level 1: you need IELTS 4.5 with a minimum band score of 4.0
  • Level 2: you need IELTS 5.5 with a minimum band score of 5.0

 

You can also use IELTS Indicator and TOEFL Special Home Edition to meet English language requirements, except for programmes that require an IELTS score higher than the standard or for any doctoral programmes.


Academic background and requirement

  • Completed the Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy Studies or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree…) with a B (69.50-74.49%) grade average or higher
  • References and a police check are required
  • Must have personal qualities that show suitability for this programme
  • May be required to attend selection interviews
  • Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy: must be capable of meeting the Children's Act 2014 requirements, including police clearance
