What can you study in English at the University of Auckland?

By taking a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English you can study texts from all over the English-speaking world, and literature from the medieval period up to the present. 

You can examine the roles texts have played in different cultures and at different periods. 

You can consider the different ways readers have approached texts, and how gender, race and other aspects of our identities have influenced writers and readers.

You will pay close attention to how texts achieve their effects and develop your skills in critical thinking. 

There are also opportunities to develop your own writing practice, including creative writing.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) comprises 24 courses across 3 years of full-time study (360 points/24 courses).

You must select two BA subjects as your two majors (The first and second major must be chosen when applying).

• Criminology, Drama, Economics, Education, Employment Relations and Organisation Studies, European Studies, French, or
• Gender Studies, Geography, German, Health and Society, History, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Linguistics, Logic and Computation, Mathematics, or
• Media and Screen Studies, Media and Screen Studies, Music, Māori Studies, Pacific Studies, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, or
• Psychology, Sociology, Spanish, Statistics, TESOL, Theological and Religious Studies

• Official translations of documents in a language other than English and the original language version
• English language proficiency

Secondary school qualifications

India: You need to have one of the following:

• 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 75 percent in the All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSC), Indian School Certificate (ISC), Karnataka, Maharashtra, and West Bengal State Board Examinations with a minimum of 70 percent in English.
• 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 80 percent in all other Higher Secondary State Board Examinations with a minimum of 75 percent in English.

China:

• The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) otherwise known as Gaokao. (Have a high school diploma or equivalent, Be in good health…) (Score required = 67%)

Tertiary qualifications

You can transfer from another tertiary institution if you meet these requirements.

• You need to have the following: One-year successful bachelor-degree level study at a recognized university (or similar institution) overseas.
• Grade required = GPE 2.4 (57%)
