Economics is available for undergraduates who are studying at the Business School and/or the Faculty of Arts.

During your studies, you will develop frameworks and methods for analyzing social and economic issues. 

You will gain an understanding of strategic decision-making and an ability to view issues within a national or international context. 

The emphasis is on developing your competence in economic analysis and applying this to real-world issues.

What can you study in Economics at the University of Auckland?

You can complete a Bachelor of Arts in Economics or a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics (potentially alongside another complementary major).

Bachelor of Commerce

You can take a major in Economics as one of your two BCom majors (a double major). 

You will need to complete a minimum of 24 courses (360 points). 

In your first year of study, a set of seven compulsory core courses (105 points) will become the building blocks for your degree.

Program structure

In your third year, you’ll choose a capstone core course – select from an industry-based project, a business simulation, a live business case, or an internship.

Secondary school qualifications

India: You need to have one of the following:

• 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 75 percent in the All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSC), Indian School Certificate (ISC), Karnataka, Maharashtra, and West Bengal State Board Examinations with a minimum of 70 percent in English.
• 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 80 percent in all other Higher Secondary State Board Examinations with a minimum of 75 percent in English.

China:

• The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) is otherwise known as Gaokao. (Have a high school diploma or equivalent, Be in good health…) (Score required = 73)

Tertiary qualifications

You can transfer from another tertiary institution if you meet these requirements.

• You need to have the following: One-year successful bachelor-degree level study at a recognized university (or similar institution) overseas.
• Grade required = GPE 3.0 (60-64%)
