Master of Commerce - Information Systems (Taught)

You can complete a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) or Master of Commerce in Information Systems in areas such as:

  • Using information and communications technology to achieve strategic goals
  • Design, development and implementation of cutting-edge solutions to solve organisational problems
  • Technical and organisational aspects of information technology
  • Digital innovation and transformation.

You will extend your knowledge and analytical ability and develop valuable research skills by conducting research projects under the guidance of academic staff.

If you choose to complete a postgraduate degree in Information Systems at the University of Auckland, more advanced or senior roles are possible, including those that impact the strategic direction of an organisation.

The 180-point MCom is a 12 or 15-month specialist masters combining coursework and a research component in either a short dissertation (60 points) or a more substantial research portfolio (90 points).

If you have completed a BCom(Hons) or equivalent, you may be eligible to undertake a 120-point MCom degree by research comprising a supervised thesis.

English Language Academy pathway programs

You can meet postgraduate English language requirements by successfully completing:

  • The Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP), or
  • The English Pathway for Postgraduate Studies (EPPS).

The ELA grades shown below are deemed to be equivalent to the following IELTS bands for admissions purposes.

  • IELTS 7.0: A- in FCertEAP or EPPS
  • IELTS 6.5: B- in FCertEAP or EPPS

 

1-To be eligible for FCertEAP, students must: (Course length: 20 weeks)

  • Hold a conditional offer of place from a New Zealand tertiary institution that recognizes FCertEAP.
  • Meet the English Language entry requirements for FCertEAP through one of the below test results (see table).

Academic background and requirement

Taught 180 points:

  • You must have completed an undergraduate degree in the same field as your intended specialisation at a recognised university (or similar institution).
  • You will need a GPE of 5.0 (70%-74.9%).
  • A major in Information Systems or equivalent and 15 points at Stage II in Statistics, or an equivalent course as approved by the Head of the Department.

Research 120 points:

  • You must have completed one year of postgraduate study, following an undergraduate degree, at a recognised university (or similar institution). Your study must have have been in the same field as your intended specialisation and you will need a GPE of 5.0 (70%-74.9%).
  • If you have completed a BCom(Hons) or equivalent, you may be eligible to undertake a 120-point MCom degree by research comprising a supervised thesis.
