Turn your passion for English into language-teaching skills so that your students can participate as global citizens.

Gain expertise in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages by studying at the university's world-ranked Faculty of Education and Social Work.

Practical experience is integral to this program. 

You will take part in two supervised practical experiences where you will observe TESOL teaching in a range of settings in Auckland, one of the most diverse cities in the world.

You will gain a useful foundation in subjects that inform TESOL education, such as psychology, philosophy, sociology, and history. 

You will develop up-to-the-minute knowledge and skills in learning, teaching, and assessment. 

This program at the University of Auckland will be useful for education leaders and policymakers as well as TESOL teachers.

Program structure

This three-year program comprises 360 points of coursework, 120 points per year. 

You’ll gain a solid grounding in planning and teaching TESOL classes through courses in: 

Pedagogy, teaching, and assessment; understanding learners and learning; and the theory and practice of education.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

English Language Academy (ELA) pathway programs

You can meet undergraduate English-language requirements by successfully completing the following:

  • The Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP), or
  • The English Pathway for Undergraduate Studies (EPUS).

The ELA grades shown below are deemed to be equivalent to the following IELTS bands for admissions purposes.

  • IELTS 7.0: A- in FCertEAP or EPUS
  • IELTS 6.5: B- in FCertEAP or EPUS
  • IELTS 6.0: C- in FCertEAP or EPUS

 

1_ To be eligible for FCertEAP, students must: (Course length: 20 weeks)

  • Hold a conditional offer of place from a New Zealand tertiary institution that recognizes FCertEAP.

Academic background and requirement

Secondary school qualifications

India: You need to have one of the following:

  • 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 75 percent in the All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSC), Indian School Certificate (ISC), Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal State Board Examinations with a minimum of 70 percent in English.
  • 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 80 percent in all other Higher Secondary State Board Examinations with a minimum of 75 percent in English.

China:

  • The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) otherwise known as Gaokao. (Have a high school diploma or equivalent, Be in good health…) (Score required = 67%)

Further requirements

You will be required to consent to the disclosure of criminal convictions as part of the application process.

Tertiary qualifications

You can transfer from another tertiary institution if you meet these requirements.

  • You need to have the following: One-year successful bachelor-degree level study at a recognized university (or similar institution) overseas.
  • Grade required = GPE 2.4 (57%)
