Master of Medical Engineering - Medical Devices and Technologies

Medical technology is getting more complex, and the field needs upskilled engineering graduates to help maintain and create it. 

Get a head start in this exciting field with the Master of Medical Engineering, designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and expertise to be effective employees in an essential field.

There are four ways to complete a MMedicalEng. Your selection will depend on your technical and educational background and career goals.

The MMedicalEng is available in 120 and 180 point taught pathways. Each pathway has two taught specializations available:

  • Biomechanical Engineering
  • Medical Devices and Technologies

The global medical devices industry is growing rapidly and increasingly involves a fusion of biomedical and materials sciences. This demands knowledge in both engineering and manufacturing.

This program provides a broad range of fundamental technical knowledge, overviews of the devices and needs in medical environments, essential skills in medical practices, regulatory processes, product development, and innovation.

The University of Auckland also boasts close relationships with local companies such as Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

English Language Academy pathway programs

You can meet postgraduate English language requirements by successfully completing:

  • The Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP), or
  • The English Pathway for Postgraduate Studies (EPPS).

The ELA grades shown below are deemed to be equivalent to the following IELTS bands for admissions purposes.

  • IELTS 7.0: A- in FCertEAP or EPPS
  • IELTS 6.5: B- in FCertEAP or EPPS

 

1-To be eligible for FCertEAP, students must: (Course length: 20 weeks)

  • Hold a conditional offer of place from a New Zealand tertiary institution that recognizes FCertEAP.
  • Meet the English Language entry requirements for FCertEAP through one of the below test results (see table).
  • IELTS Indicator can also be accepted during 2022 until further notice.

Academic background and requirement

Taught 120 points

You must have completed a four-year Bachelors degree in engineering at a recognized university (or similar institution) that includes:

  • Broad coverage in your first year of the foundational science topics that underpin engineering disciplines: mathematical modeling, chemical and materials science, electrical engineering theory, mechanics, programming, and engineering design
  • One year of postgraduate-level study
  • A research project or dissertation comprising at least one-quarter of the final year

You will need a GPE of 4.0 (65%-69.9%).

Alternatively, you must have completed one year of postgraduate study, following an undergraduate degree, in a relevant subject at a recognized university (or similar institution) with a GPE of 4.0 (65%-69.9%).

Note: Relevant subjects include applied science, bioengineering, computer science, data science, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, information technology, mechatronics, science, or technology.

Taught 180 points

You must have completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject at a recognized university (or similar institution) with a GPE of 4.0 (65%-69.9%).

Note: Relevant subjects include applied science, bioengineering, computer science, data science, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, information technology, mechatronics, science, or technology.

Other pathways to study

If you do not meet the GPE requirement, you can still gain entry by passing 60 points toward one of the following with a GPA of 4.0:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering in a relevant subject
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Engineering
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Engineering

In exceptional circumstances, the university will consider you for entry if you have completed an undergraduate degree and have three years of work experience in engineering.
