You can study Biological Sciences as a major in the Bachelor of Science (BSc). 

Biology lies at the core of New Zealand’s economic and natural environments. 

Discovery in the biosciences has advanced at breathtaking speed, leading to a new generation of therapies in health and medicine, sustainable consumer-focused products in ag biotech industries, and novel strategies for the protection of fragile ecosystems.

Bachelor of Science (BSc) majoring in Biological Sciences

There are many options available to you within a BSc Biological Sciences major.

Your BSc programme will consist of courses worth 15 points each, totalling 360 points. 

You can choose to keep your Biological Sciences major general, or you can follow one of nine pathways as a way to focus your studies further. 

You can also choose to do a double major, which means you study two Science subjects at the same time.

You must complete a capstone course in your final year of study. 

The capstone course is a student-led project where you integrate and apply your learning to a real-world problem in your chosen major or specialisation.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

English Language Academy (ELA) pathway programs

You can meet undergraduate English-language requirements by successfully completing the following:

  • The Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP), or
  • The English Pathway for Undergraduate Studies (EPUS).

The ELA grades shown below are deemed to be equivalent to the following IELTS bands for admissions purposes.

  • IELTS 7.0: A- in FCertEAP or EPUS
  • IELTS 6.5: B- in FCertEAP or EPUS
  • IELTS 6.0: C- in FCertEAP or EPUS

 

1_ To be eligible for FCertEAP, students must: (Course length: 20 weeks)

  • Hold a conditional offer of place from a New Zealand tertiary institution that recognizes FCertEAP.

Academic background and requirement

Secondary school qualifications

India: You need to have one of the following:

  • 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 75 percent in the All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSC), Indian School Certificate (ISC), Karnataka, Maharashtra, and West Bengal State Board Examinations with a minimum of 70 percent in English.
  • 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 80 percent in all other Higher Secondary State Board Examinations with a minimum of 75 percent in English.

China:

  • The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) otherwise known as Gaokao. (Have a high school diploma or equivalent, Be in good health…) (Score required = 70%)

Tertiary qualifications

You can transfer from another tertiary institution if you meet these requirements.

  • You need to have the following: One-year successful bachelor-degree level study at a recognized university (or similar institution) overseas.
  • Grade required = GPE 3.0 (60-64%)
