Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Nutrition - Food Science pathway

If you have a mind for science and you’re keen to keep your options open, then the BSc (Bachelor of Science) is the degree for you. With many undergraduate majors in a wide range of subject areas, the BSc will allow you to incorporate different areas of interest and expertise. 

As well as strongly emphasising transferable skills to improve your employment opportunities, this programme will expose you to cutting-edge technologies and provide a gateway to independent research. 

Throughout your undergraduate degree you’ll be taught by knowledgeable scientists, many of whom are major contributors in their field.

What can you study in Food Science and Nutrition?

You can study Food Science and Nutrition as a specialisation in the Bachelor of Science (BSc). This specialisation offers two distinct pathways: the Food Science pathway and the Nutrition pathway.

If you follow the Food Science pathway, you’ll study areas such as:

  • Manufacturing, processing and production in food-related industries
  • Food components, their properties and ways in which they interact in food products
  • Nutrigenomics
  • Emerging technologies and their benefits
  • Food safety
  • Product development

If you follow the Nutrition pathway, you’ll study areas such as:

  • Human nutrition
  • Maintenance of good health
  • Wellbeing of populations
  • Environmental, social, economic and cultural determinants of eating behaviours

Academic Requirements

Secondary school qualifications

India: You need to have one of the following:

  • AISSC, ISC and Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal State Board Examinations: If you are applying for Food Science and Nutrition you will need a score of 81
  • All other Higher Secondary State Board Examinations: If you are applying for Food Science and Nutrition you will need a score of 84

China:

  • The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) otherwise known as Gaokao. (Have a high school diploma or equivalent, Be in good health…)
  • If you are applying for Food Science and Nutrition you will need a Gaokao score of 73.

Tertiary qualifications

You can transfer from another tertiary institution if you meet these requirements.

  • You need to have the following: One year successful bachelor-degree level study at a recognised university (or similar institution) overseas.
  • If you are applying for Food Science and Nutrition you must have a GPE of 3.5 (62-67%), {For India and China GPE of 4.0 (65-69%) is required}.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

English Language Academy (ELA) pathway programmes

You can meet undergraduate English-language requirements by successfully completing:

  • The Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP), or
  • The English Pathway for Undergraduate Studies (EPUS).

To be eligible for FCertEAP, students must:

  • Hold a conditional offer of place from a New Zealand tertiary institution that recognises FCertEAP.
  • Meet the English Language entry requirements for FCertEAP through one of the below test results (see table). IELTS Indicator can also be accepted during 2021 until further notice.
