With medical engineering at The University of Newcastle, you'll learn to apply engineering principles and design processes to find innovative solutions to healthcare problems.

Tailor your degree to suit your study and career interests by choosing from two majors, medical devices or biomechanics major.

Build critical medical and engineering skills by studying through courses in human pathophysiology, analog and digital communications, programming and computing, pharmacology, electrical engineering design, and neurobiology.

Become job-ready through professional practice courses. 

You'll learn to tackle ‘wicked problems’ and develop essential workplace skills in finance, project management, sustainability, communication and entrepreneurship.

 

Hands-on practical experience: 

build vital professional networks and hands-on industry experience with 12 weeks of professional practice throughout your degree.

 

Practical experience

Academic background and requirement

Assumed Knowledge:

  • Mathematics (Band 5 or above) or equivalent.
  • One science-related subject would also be an advantage (Physics or Chemistry preferred).

Applicants who have achieved less than Band 5 may be admitted to the program but may need additional studies to complete the program's requirements successfully.

Applicants who have completed HSC Mathematics General 2 may be admitted to the program but can expect to undertake additional studies to complete the program's requirements. successfully

 

Recommended Studies:

  • HSC Mathematics Extension 1 or equivalent.
  • Study of one science-related subject would also be an advantage (Physics or Chemistry preferred).

 

Compulsory Program Requirements:

Industrial Experience is a compulsory requirement of the program. 

It includes 4 weeks undertaken as part of your in-program WIL experience (ENGG3000) and an additional 8 weeks (totalling 12 weeks).

Students are encouraged to obtain and report on a substantial block of this experience at one time. Still, several shorter periods, of not less than 2 weeks duration, will be accepted.

 

Entry requirements:

Admission to undergraduate degree programs usually requires successful completion of a senior secondary school qualification similar to the Higher School Certificate (HSC), the highest educational award in New South Wales schools.
