People exercise for various reasons, from staying fit and healthy and managing disease and health conditions to competing in recreational and elite sports. 

Exercise and Sport Science degree at The University of Newcastle is an inspiring and rapidly evolving field that explores how best to prescribe and deliver exercise for health and performance benefits.

When you study for a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Newcastle, you will benefit from a comprehensive approach to learning about all aspects of physical health for the entire population. 

 

Practical experience

The Exercise Science building at the Ourimbah campus features high-quality laboratories, the latest equipment and a fully stocked gym to aid your on-campus training.

You will also be given opportunities to gain valuable work experience in the sports and health industry through the professional placement program (140 hours). 

In addition to placements with clinics and hospitals, it has strong ties with the Central Coast Mariners Football Club, the Newcastle Jets Football Club and the Newcastle Knights Rugby League Club to ensure interesting and dynamic placement opportunities.

These practical skills, along with theory, will teach you proper procedures for exercise testing and prescription to improve sports performance and general health.

Additionally, Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science students are eligible to enrol in an International study, which offers them the opportunity to undertake an overseas placement to expand their knowledge and skills and apply them in an external and international context.

 

Work Integrated Learning opportunities

through our professional placement program, students are given opportunities to gain valuable work experience with professional sporting teams, sports organisations, clinics and hospitals.

Academic background and requirement

Assumed Knowledge: At least two of the: 

  • HSC Biology or equivalent,
  • HSC Chemistry or equivalent,
  • HSC Mathematics Advanced or equivalent,
  • HSC Physics or equivalent

 

Recommended Studies:

  • HSC Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) or equivalent

 

Compulsory Program Requirements:

Most exercise and sports science courses include laboratory classes during which students will learn the practical skills needed in the profession. Students must attend 80% of all laboratory activities to pass each course successfully. 

To safely and competently participate in these classes, students must have completed their First Aid & CPR qualifications by the end of their first year. 

Completing the First Aid & CPR qualifications is a milestone for enrolment in EXSS2010. 

Students will also be given opportunities to gain valuable work experience in the exercise and sport science industry through the second and third-year placement courses (EXSS2100 and EXSS3040). 

To graduate from the program, students must complete 140 hours of suitably supervised practical work defined by Exercise and Sport Science Australia.

 

Entry requirements:

Admission to undergraduate degree programs usually requires successful completion of a senior secondary school qualification similar to the Higher School Certificate (HSC), the highest educational award in New South Wales schools.
