Overview

Master of Cultural Materials Conservation

Take advantage of this unique position as a laboratory-based interdisciplinary program and work with senior heritage professionals and conservators to preserve art and objects for future generations. 

You’ll get involved with Indigenous projects, including: 

the Association of Northern Kimberley Arnhem Aboriginal Artists and the Warmun Art Centre, and global institutions, like the National Museum of the Philippines, Museums Victoria and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Victoria.

Designed for those willing to extend themselves, you will have access to sophisticated scientific conservation equipment at the University of Melbourne’s Science and Engineering faculties, where you can hone your ability as a master conservator. 

You can also gain professional experience through a national or international internship, where you’ll work under senior heritage professionals and conservators to conduct conservation research or treatment.

All students are required to complete the Capstone requirement for the program (at least 25 points).

Academic background and requirement

  • an undergraduate degree, or equivalent, including at least 50 credit points at second-year level or above in subjects requiring written and analytical assessment, with a weighted average mark of at least H2B (70%), or equivalent

In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:

  • Prior academic performance; and
  • Relevance of previous studies

Applicants with the following may be awarded up to 50 points of credit:

  • an undergraduate degree, in a cognate discipline, with at least an H2B (70%) weighted average, or equivalent

Applicants with the following may be awarded up to 100 points of credit:

  • An honours degree in a cognate discipline, with at least an H2B (70%) weighted average, or equivalent; or
  • An undergraduate degree in a cognate discipline, with at least H2B (70%) weighted average, or equivalent, and at least two years of documented, relevant work experience

Applicants seeking credit must provide the following documentation in support of their application for the recognition of prior professional experience:

  • Brief curriculum vitae, detailing work experience
  • Contact details of two referees
  • A covering letter outlining the applicants professional background and how this prepares them to successfully undertake the program

Completion of study equivalent to 25 points of university-level chemistry would be considered an advantage.

 

Chemistry Bridging Course

A level of competence in chemistry is essential to the professional practice of cultural materials conservation.

The Chemistry Bridging Course is a one-week preparatory program specifically tailored for students who lack a chemistry background and wish to pursue studies in conservation. 

It is composed of an intensive program of lectures, tutorials, and practical classes for those who wish to revise course‐relevant chemistry concepts and skills.
