Overview

Master of Speech Pathology

La Trobe's Master of Speech Pathology gives you the knowledge and skills to help people realise their communication and swallowing potential. 

Learn how to observe communication and mealtimes in everyday settings, conduct assessments, interpret clinical data and develop interventions. 

You'll also gain hands-on experience working with a range of individual clients.

You'll participate in clinical workshops, guided demonstration sessions, and simulation activities as you learn. 

You'll also work with service providers to help people with communication and swallowing needs participate and feel included in their community.

Graduate ready to help people live their best lives.

You'll learn the following:

  • Speech pathology practice
  • Assessment of communication and swallowing
  • Therapeutic intervention and management
  • Clinical management

Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)

During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice.

Academic background and requirement

Prerequisites

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent).

Selection criteria

Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70 (calculated across the entire completed degree) in any of the following:

  • Australian bachelor-level degree (or equivalent)
  • Australian masters by coursework degree (or equivalent)
  • Australian graduate diploma (or equivalent)

All students are expected to undertake a four-week bridging course at the Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus, which is designed to enable students to develop foundation knowledge in: 

Speech Pathology (including human bioscience (anatomy and physiology), linguistics (phonetics and grammar) and problem-based learning) will serve as a basis for their future studies in Speech Pathology.
