The Post-Baccalaureate Diploma program in Economics is designed for:

  • People who already have an undergraduate degree in another discipline and would like a rigorous and structured introduction to economics;
  • those with a degree from outside Canada, whether in economics or another discipline, who are looking for a one-year, recognized, Canadian qualification in economics;
  • anyone who would like additional preparation for graduate education in economics.

The PBD in Economics at Carleton University provides:

  • Eight months of intensive training in economic theory, econometric methods, and applied economics;
  • English-language training for students who are not yet fluent in English;
  • a structured and clearly defined course of study.

Students with scores shown in Table below may be admitted with an English as a Second Language Requirement (ESLR).  

When they first start in their program, these students will be required to take our ESL Foundation courses along with a limited number of courses from their degree program. 

This admission with an ESLR allows students to earn academic credits from degree courses taken while completing the English requirements.

Academic background and requirement

  • Admission into the program requires applicants to hold an undergraduate degree from a recognized university with a minimum B+ average, preferably with Honours.
  • It is strongly recommended that applicants have successfully completed university-level introductory (micro- and macro-) economics, calculus, and linear algebra with a grade of B+ or higher in each.
