This specialty is designed for students who want to work as an early childhood teacher in an early childhood centre. You’ll develop your understanding of early childhood education and the early childhood teaching national curriculum, Te Whariki.
If you want to specialise in working with Pacific children, you can complete your practicum courses at a Pacific ECE centre, and study courses that develop your skills to be an effective early childhood teacher working with Pacific children.
All students need to complete a number of teaching placements in a diverse range of practicum centres (as prescribed by the Teaching Council). The centres are mainly based in Auckland and include early childhood education and full daycare centres, kindergartens and community-based preschool facilities.
As part of your placements you work with children from 0-5 years in different settings over your three years of study. For many students this workplace experience is the highlight of the degree.

AUT International House is an English language school next to the AUT City Campus. It is part of AUT and offers a range of qualifications, including GIE – the AUT university entrance and preparation programme.
On-campus academic English courses (GIE and IELTS Full-time) at International House:
The GIE programme prepares you for entry into most AUT programmes (some health and education programmes require IELTS).
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading and Writing and no less than 5.0 in Speaking and Listening
There is a different entry requirement for each level of the IELTS course.
All applicants need to meet AUT’s minimum entry requirements qualification equivalent to New Zealand year 13 or University Entrance.

If you don’t have the academic qualifications needed for direct entry into an AUT programme, you can enrol in a foundation programme.
If you successfully complete the foundation programme and the get the required grades, you are guaranteed entry into an appropriate AUT programme.
AUT has established a partnership with NCUK, enabling you to study at a NCUK Study Centre in your home country, and then come directly into your chosen AUT degree.
