Health protection is a growing industry and health protection and environmental health officers are in high demand throughout New Zealand – the university students often secure employment before they graduate. This major is a great stepping stone to a career as an environmental health officer or health protection officer.
The Health Protection major explores environmental health, pollution control, food safety, environmental and public health law, risk assessment, toxicology and communicable disease control. You’ll be equipped to keep people safe in their homes, offices and natural environment.
In your final year you can enrol in the Research Project course (30 points) if you have at least a B grade average in 60 points at level 6. This may involve working on an industry-related project related to your major.

AUT International House is an English language school next to the AUT City Campus. It is part of AUT and offers a range of qualifications, including GIE – the AUT university entrance and preparation programme.
On-campus academic English courses (GIE and IELTS Full-time) at International House:
The GIE programme prepares you for entry into most AUT programmes (some health and education programmes require IELTS).
Entry requirement:
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading and Writing and no less than 5.0 in Speaking and Listening

All applicants need to meet AUT’s minimum entry requirements qualification equivalent to New Zealand year 13 or University Entrance.

Consider starting with the university Certificate or Diploma in Applied Science.
If you don’t have the academic qualifications needed for direct entry into an AUT programme, you can enrol in a foundation programme.
If you successfully complete the foundation programme and the get the required grades, you are guaranteed entry into an appropriate AUT programme.

AUT has established a partnership with NCUK, enabling you to study at a NCUK Study Centre in your home country, and then come directly into your chosen AUT degree.
