Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (Taught)

The MA offers you a range of choices. There are research and taught degrees, one (120-point) or two-year (240-point) options depending on your entry qualification, and more than 40 subjects for study. 

Your academic background may enable you to study a subject different to that of your previous specialization.  

The research masters gives you an exciting opportunity to contribute to the  knowledge in your field by completing a substantial research project alongside some of New Zealand’s leading scholars.

In a taught masters you can deepen your knowledge in small classes, enjoy close interaction with academic staff, and complete a smaller research project.

What you can study in Applied Linguistics

The Master of Arts in Linguistics has been designed to ensure that you receive a broad coverage of the areas that inform the study of Applied Linguistics, and to also give you the opportunity to focus on a specific area of your own choice. 

It provides a firm theoretical and research basis for progression to study at doctoral level.

The MA in Applied Linguistics aims to:

  • Provide you with a sound knowledge base in the key areas of enquiry in Applied Linguistics.
  • Develop your ability to utilize technical knowledge from a variety of areas to address real-world problems concerning the learning, use, teaching and assessment of language.
  • Equip you with the research skills needed to investigate real-world problems concerning the learning, use, teaching and assessment of language.

English Language Academy pathway programmes

You can meet postgraduate English language requirements by successfully completing:
1_ The Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP), or
2_ The English Pathway for Postgraduate Studies (EPPS).


Academic background and requirement

Taught 240 points:

1_ A bachelors degree with a major in Language Teaching/TESOL, or in Linguistics, or a language, or other relevant subject with the approval of the Academic Head or nominee.

Or,

2_ A bachelors degree and at least two years of second language teaching experience.

You must have a Grade Point Average of 5.0 (70%-74.9%) or higher in at least 45 points above Stage II in the major. The following subject may also be considered for entry: Language Education in any language.

 

Career opportunities

Many graduates of Linguistics become educators in the tertiary or adult education sectors both in New Zealand and overseas.

Past graduates have gone on to achieve in many different roles, from managing a language school to being involved in academic administration, from coordinating language courses to teaching in Universities, polytechs and English language centers in New Zealand.
