Overview

Master of Engineering Studies in Chemical and Materials Engineering

The Master of Engineering Studies (MEngSt) allows students with academic engineering backgrounds to expand their existing theoretical and practical skills.

What can you study in Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Auckland?

Postgraduate students in Chemical and Materials Engineering gain a deeper understanding of how things work, with the potential to develop new technologies. Areas of interest include:

  • Advanced and nanomaterials research, which involves in-depth studies into properties, performance, processing, microstructure, and industrial applications
  • Chemical and process engineering, including aluminum smelting technology, heat exchange, iron and steel making, food processing, high-pressure sterilization, and more
  • Energy and the environment, including biodiesel, oil and gas processing, thermal management, airflow, and heat transfer, and clean technologies
  • Food and bioproduct processing, with a focus on value-added food products and cost-effective technologies
  • Materials engineering, with studies in novel materials design, manufacturing, and processing. Specialist areas are light metals, nanomaterials, and biomaterials
  • Separation and reaction engineering, specializing in green process engineering
  • Surface and materials science, from the nano to large-scale

Program structure:

Taught: Chemical and Materials Engineering is only available as a 120-point (1-year full-time) option.

Academic background and requirement

Taught 120 points:

You must have completed a four-year bachelor's degree in engineering at a recognized university (or similar institution), in a field similar to your intended specialization, which includes:

  • 1_ Broad coverage in your first year of the foundational science topics that underpin engineering disciplines: mathematical modeling, chemical and materials science, electrical engineering theory, mechanics, programming, and engineering design.
  • 2_ One year of postgraduate-level study
  • 3_ A research project or dissertation comprising at least one-quarter of the final year.

You will need a GPE of 4.0 (65%-69.9%).

Other pathways to study

If you do not meet the GPE requirement, you can still gain entry by passing 60 points toward the Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering with a GPA of 4.0.

In exceptional circumstances, the university will consider you for entry if you have completed an undergraduate degree and have three years of work experience in engineering.
