Advanced Diploma - Fire Protection Engineering Technology

Seneca College's Fire Protection Engineering Technology (FPT) advanced diploma program is the leading North American program for fire prevention education. 

Under the guidance of professors and industry experts, you will work with advanced fire protection equipment. Expect hands-on experience in the design and installation of fire protection systems.

Major areas of study include:

the advanced design and installation of fire protection systems, leading-edge computer software systems, the governing codes and standards, and optional training in fire investigation, insurance and wildland fire suppression.

Once you complete the FPT program, you can move forward to the Firefighter, Pre–Service Education & Training (FFP) program for a career in firefighting.

Skills

Throughout this program, you will develop the following skills:

  • Advanced design and installation of fire protection systems (sprinklers and alarms)
  • Leading-edge computer software systems
  • Fire dynamics
  • Governing codes and standards
  • Optional training in fire investigation, insurance and wildland fire suppression

This program is offered in Seneca's hybrid delivery format, with some courses available in Seneca's flexible delivery format. Some coursework is online, and some must be completed in person. 

For courses offered in a flexible delivery format, professors use innovative learning spaces and technology to teach students in a classroom or lab and broadcast in real-time to students attending remotely.

As an international student, you have the option of learning English at Seneca's English Language Institute (ELI) before starting your professional program. 

There are eight (8) levels in the ELI that are seven (7) weeks in length each. There are six (6) start dates per year: January, March, May, July, September and November.

If you apply to a professional program and you do not meet Seneca’s English requirements, you may receive an Offer of Admission to your program that is conditional upon completion of the English Language Institute.

The college will use your English test score to place you at the most appropriate ELI level. If you do not have an English score, you will take a placement test when you arrive on campus.

Levels 6, 7 and 8: ELI plus Seneca subjects. Earn up to four Seneca credits while in the ELI.

After finishing Level 8, You will receive a Certificate of Standing from the ELI, and you will be automatically registered in your program at Seneca. You will not have to take another English test.


Education pathway


Academic background and requirement

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or a mature applicant

Mature applicants applying to degree programs must be 19 years old by the first day of scheduled classes and have been away from high school for at least two years

Mature applicants must meet all program-specific prerequisite courses. Pre-admission testing is not permitted to meet degree program prerequisites.

  • English: Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent course
  • Mathematics: Grade 12 C or U, or Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U), or equivalent course
