The Marine and Freshwater Biology at Guelph university major capitalizes on Guelph’s recognized excellence in aquatic research and provides a broad perspective on aquatic environments based on the physical as well as biological sciences. 

In this major, you will build upon core courses in ecology, evolution, genetics, and physiology of aquatic biota as you study freshwater and marine environments and work with aquatic organisms experimentally in the field and in the lab. 

You will have the opportunity to perform independent research projects under a variety of field and laboratory conditions to enhance your learning experience. 

Work placements enable students to gain knowledge, skills, and values appropriate for working with individuals and groups in a variety of settings.

The English Language Certificate Program (ELCP) is an intensive academic English program designed to prepare you for academic success. You will learn the skills you need to succeed in university studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The 7-week terms include 20 hours of class per week.

Certificate of Proficiency

When you successfully complete the advanced level of the ELCP, you earn the University of Guelph Certificate of English Proficiency. This certificate meets the English proficiency requirements for admission to the University of Guelph and University of Guelph-Humber.

  • Levels 1 and 2 - High beginner level
  • Levels 3 and 4 - Low intermediate level
  • Levels 5 and 6 - Intermediate level - most students who have studied English in secondary school enter the program at this level or higher
  • Levels 7 and 8 - High intermediate level
  • Levels 9 and 10 - Advanced level. Completion of both Level 9 and Level 10 meets the English proficiency requirement for entry into undergraduate and graduate degree programs

What level should you apply for?

You do not need to apply for a specific level. You will be tested during the first week of the semester and placed in the appropriate level of the English Language Certificate Program according to your performance.


Academic background and requirement

India:

Students may submit verified 10th standard board results accompanied by anticipated Class 12 grades listed by subject from the school, with a minimum average of 80%.

China: 

1. Students progressing through Upper Middle School: the Academic Proficiency Test (APT)/HuiKao from CHESICC-Parchment Portal Service with a minimum of 5 relevant required subjects for the degree and major, along with school documents for grades 10, 11, and first semester Grade 12 are required. Final official Upper Middle School Graduation Certificate will be required in August from the CHESICC-Parchment Portal Service.

2. Students who finished high school in a previous year are required to submit the Upper Middle School Graduation Certificate and the Chinese National University Entrance Examinations (NCEE) including a minimum of 5 relevant required subjects.

Iran:

Diploma Metevaseth/National High School Diploma (after 12 years) or Pre-university year + Diploma Metevaseth with a minimum of 16.
