Overview

Master of Journalism

For more than 20 years, Carleton University has offered one of the country's best Master of Journalism (MJ) programs.

In this program, you will work with talented faculty whose professional reputations are unmatched in the country.

The School of Journalism and Communication provides two entry points into the MJ program – Year One or Year Two.

Year One Entry

Most applicants will be admitted to Year One of the two-year program.

The first year provides intensive foundational training in print, broadcast and online journalism alongside courses on journalism law, journalism theory, professional practices and reporting methods.

In the second year, students combine media- and/or subject-specific workshop courses. In the second year, Students with electives and specialized seminars designed to complement their capstone Master’s Research Project.

Year Two Entry

The second entry point is for students with prior journalistic experience or credentials who will be admitted directly into Year Two

They will normally pursue the Journalism Studies completion option or a path of coursework selected in consultation with the Supervisor of Graduate Studies, including a thesis or master’s research project, as appropriate.

Capital Advantage

Studying in the nation’s capital—the centre of political and public policy journalism as well as Canada’s leading high-tech community—provides you with a living laboratory in which to hone your reporting skills in international relations, business, government, politics, social affairs, arts & culture, information technology and science & research.

The School also has a member of faculty who assists students in finding employment, and several media organizations visit campus each year to interview students for summer or permanent positions.
