Master of Arts - Geography

The Geography MA offers the opportunity to investigate how elements of place, space and environment interact with one another to explain human activities. 

Students at Carleton University are encouraged to identify and explore a particular problem under the guidance of one or more knowledgeable members of the faculty.

Collaborative specializations in African Studies (MA only), Climate Change (MA and MSc), Latin American and Caribbean Studies (MA only) and Data Science (MA, MSc thesis only) are also available.

  • showing that you have completed ESLA 1900 or ESLA 1905 at Carleton University with a final grade of B- or higher; or
  • present official certification (transcripts) that you have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree within the past three years in a university in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, or any country in which the primary language is English, where the language of instruction in the relevant educational institution was English, and the language of instruction in their most recently completed undergraduate or graduate degree was English.

Note: Letters from your universities stating the medium of instruction is English are not acceptable.


Academic background and requirement

  • The requirement for admission into the master's program is a B.A.(Honours) or B.Sc. (Honours) in Geography or a related discipline, with at least B+ standing.
  • In exceptional cases, pertinent work experience may be considered in support of an application to the Department.
  • Students entering the program from other disciplines or with academic deficiencies may be required to take additional courses.
