Master of Arts - Anthropology

The Master of Arts program in Anthropology focuses on sociocultural anthropology. 

The anthropology faculty conduct research and support graduate students in a variety of specific areas of interest, such as:

Studies of ritual and religion, international development, globalization and transnationalism, gender and sexuality, immigrant experiences, race, nationalism and ethnicity, colonialism and post-colonialism, ethnohistory, language and culture, health and illness, performance, art and museum collections, popular culture, and human-environment relations.

At the M.A. level, Carleton University offers specializations in African Studies, Climate Change, Digital Humanities, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

  • presenting one of the official Language Proficiency (ESL) test scores as defined in the table below;
  • showing that you have completed ESLA 1900 or ESLA 1905 at Carleton University with a final grade of B- or higher; or
  • present official certification (transcripts) that you have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree within the past three years in a university in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, or any country in which the primary language is English, where the language of instruction in the relevant educational institution was English, and the language of instruction in their most recently completed undergraduate or graduate degree was English.

Note: Letters from your universities stating the medium of instruction is English are not acceptable.


Academic background and requirement

  • A grade of B- or better is required in each credit counted toward the master's degree. With the recommendation of the department, and permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, a candidate may be allowed a grade of C+ in 1.0 credit or each of two 0.5-credits.
