Overview

Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Systems) Honours

Computer systems engineering at ECU requires in-depth knowledge of digital and analogue electronic systems along with a detailed understanding of computer architecture, software design and hardware-software interfacing.

The program focuses on the development of knowledge and skills relevant to professional engineering practice and along with a sound theoretical base, includes strong elements of practical problem-solving, teamwork and project development.

The course provides a sound basis in mathematics, and in the fundamentals of electronics and engineering design principles in the first two years of study, along with relevant computer technology and programming principles.

In the final two years of study, advanced topics from both the electronics and computer systems engineering fields are covered including:

software engineering, data networks and communication systems, digital signal processing, real-time embedded systems, industrial control, and robotics to prepare students to enter their chosen profession with relevant knowledge and skills.

The first year of this course includes a set of eight units that are common across all engineering honours courses.

Work Experience requirement

Students are required to undertake a minimum of 12 weeks of practical work experience in an engineering industry environment. This will normally be undertaken during a vacation period.

  • Taught in 10-week terms, with possible start dates every five weeks.
  • Focuses on a mixture of communication skills and academic study skills
  • With a minimum of 65%, you will be able to graduate to the next AEP level or to your designated course.
  • No further English testing is required (except for Nursing and other higher English course requirements).
  • Leads into Diploma, Foundation and PQP programs at ECC and various degree programs at ECU.

Academic background and requirement

All applicants are required to have

  • Mathematics, and
  • Physics or Engineering Studies, with equivalents considered, and
  • Chemistry, with equivalents considered.

It is desirable that all applicants have Physics ATAR or Engineering Studies ATAR, with equivalents considered.

Students without Physics ATAR or Engineering Studies ATAR may need to take a bridging unit in the first year of their studies.

Minimum requirements for secondary school results can change, depending on the country where you completed your secondary study.

If you've completed a Certificate IV, Diploma, or Advanced Diploma at a recognized Australian education provider, this may also help you meet minimum entry requirements for an undergraduate course.
