Overview

Bachelor of Science - Chemistry

Provides a thorough grounding in analytical chemistry.

With a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills and instrumentation, students study diverse methods used to investigate the chemical nature of substances in a range of applications - from pure laboratory analysis to environmental investigations and monitoring and medical settings.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply broad discipline knowledge to a range of theoretical and practical chemistry situations.
  2. Analyse experimental data using chemsitry approaches.
  3. Formulate hypotheses, design and undertake experiments to generate solutions to chemistry problems.
  4. Synthesise relevant information from multiple sources using digital technologies.
  5. Communicate chemical knowledge and values in professional and public contexts.
  6. Incorporate diverse perspectives into scientific practice, applying a global outlook and including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural perspectives.

Work Experience option

Students have the opportunity to seek a semester long Work Integrated Learning placement with an industry partner relevant to the Science and Mathematics discipline.

Attendance requirements

Students are required to complete a placement which is equivalent to one semester of full-time study, or approximately 450 hours. 

Whilst attendance is negotiated with the WIL host organisation, typically students will be expected to attend 5 days a week for 12 weeks.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

The Academic English Program (AEP) is designed for students who plan to study at an Australian university or who are interested in developing academic reading, writing, listening and communication skills. 

It is taught in 10 week terms, with start dates approximately every five weeks.

It is designed to improve your English and study skills, enabling you to be successful in your diploma and PQP courses at ECC as well as under or postgraduate programs at ECU. 

No further English testing is required (except for Nursing and other higher English course requirements). Therefore, with a minimum of 65%, you are able to graduate to the next AEP level or your designated course.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate their English language proficiency before they enter an ECC program.

English language proficiency can be determined by submitting evidence of Year 12 studies or IELTS Test scores, or Pearson English Test scores or equivalent as shown in the table below.

Academic background and requirement

All applicants are required to have passed ATAR Chemistry, with equivalents considered. Alternatively applicants can have passed SCC1123 Chemistry for the life sciences, with equivalents considered.
