Complete either a thesis or a research project in engineering.

The Master of Engineering is designed to help you develop your research skills and enhance your knowledge in the field of engineering. 

There are two pathways: Research (includes a thesis), or Coursework (includes a research project)

The university is proud to be home to a number of internationally renowned research institutes and centers, and many of the university students complete their research project in collaboration with these well-known research entities. 

AUT's expertise in engineering ranges from telecommunications to materials and manufacturing technologies, and from industrial optimization to engines and vehicles.

 

What you study

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience you will be enrolled in either the 120-point (one-year full-time) Master of Engineering or the 180-point (1.5 years full-time) Master of Engineering.

 

120-point Master of Engineering

Applicants who have previously completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering can apply for the 120-point Master of Engineering.

180-point Master of Engineering

Applicants with a three-year engineering degree will be enrolled in the 180-point Master of Engineering.

Language courses at AUT International House:

AUT International House is an English language school next to the AUT City Campus. It is part of AUT and offers a range of qualifications, including GIE – the AUT university entrance and preparation programme.

On-campus academic English courses (GIE and IELTS Full-time) at International House:

1) GIE (academic preparation and university entrance programme)

The GIE programme prepares you for entry into most AUT programmes (some health and education programmes require IELTS).

Entry requirement:

IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading and Writing and no less than 5.0 in Speaking and Listening

2) IELTS Full-time

Entry requirement:

There is a different entry requirements for each level of the IELTS course.

  • Level 1: you need IELTS 4.5 with a minimum band score of 4.0
  • Level 2: you need IELTS 5.5 with a minimum band score of 5.0

 

You can also use IELTS Indicator and TOEFL Special Home Edition to meet English language requirements, except for programmes that require an IELTS score higher than the standard or for any doctoral programmes.


Academic background and requirement

Must have completed one of the following with a B (69.50-74.49%) grade average or higher, or equivalent:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)¹
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering¹
  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology including the Course ENGE601²

1. You can study the 120-point (one-year full-time) Master of Engineering.
2. Applicants with a three-year engineering degree will be enrolled in the 180-point Master of Engineering.

 

Applicants must normally have completed an advanced level of calculus at least equivalent to NZQF Level 6.

Applicants to the research pathway are also required to submit a Postgraduate Research Proposal (PGR1 form) before enrolling in the thesis.
