Master of Science - Environmental Science

With the 180-point Master of Science you can complete a research project in an area of your interest and develop advanced-level knowledge of science, or computer and mathematical sciences in as little as one year.

You can choose to study the generic Master of Science focusing on either science or computer and mathematical sciences, or one of: 

Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Food Science, Geospatial Science, Marine Science, Microbiology, and Molecular Genetics.

In as little as one year, you can gain advanced research skills and knowledge in friendly and professional development.

This is your opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research, under the supervision of AUT's research-active staff in the areas of science, or computer and mathematical sciences.

 

What you study

You complete courses to make up a total of 180 points. Enrolment in courses is subject to meeting all requirements and availability of courses.

Environmental Science

Complete the following courses:

  • SCIE807 Advanced Statistical Modelling
  • ECOL801 Advanced Ecology
  • ECOL802 Macroecology and Biogeography
  • ENVS801 Applications of Geographical Information Systems (15 points)
  • CONS804 Global Change Biology (15 points)

And 90 points from:

  • SCIE806 Scientific Research and communication (15 points) or SCIE808 Advanced Scientific Enquiry (15 points)
  • SCIE805 Quantitative Analysis (15 points) or SCIE807 Advanced Statistical Modelling (15 points)
  • SCIE997 Research Project (60 points)

And the remaining points from other courses in the Master of Science.

Language courses at AUT International House:

AUT International House is an English language school next to the AUT City Campus. It is part of AUT and offers a range of qualifications, including GIE – the AUT university entrance and preparation programme.

On-campus academic English courses (GIE and IELTS Full-time) at International House:

1) GIE (academic preparation and university entrance programme)

The GIE programme prepares you for entry into most AUT programmes (some health and education programmes require IELTS).

Entry requirement:

IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading and Writing and no less than 5.0 in Speaking and Listening

2) IELTS Full-time

Entry requirement:

There is a different entry requirements for each level of the IELTS course.

  • Level 1: you need IELTS 4.5 with a minimum band score of 4.0
  • Level 2: you need IELTS 5.5 with a minimum band score of 5.0

 

You can also use IELTS Indicator and TOEFL Special Home Edition to meet English language requirements, except for programmes that require an IELTS score higher than the standard or for any doctoral programmes.

One of the following (or equivalent) with a B (69.50-74.49%) grade average in courses at level 7:

  • Bachelor of Science OR
  • Graduate Diploma in Science
