What can you study in Art History at the University of Auckland?

Art History examines the many roles the visual arts have played in different cultures and in different periods — aesthetic, social, religious, political, and commercial.

You can explore not only painting, drawing, and sculpture, but also architecture, photography, video, performance art, design, and the graphic and decorative arts.

The university lectures are visually stimulating, containing a variety of beautiful, puzzling, and sometimes controversial images.

As an Art History student, you can have the opportunity to study famous artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Marina Abramovic, Olafur Eliasson, Lisa Reihana, Simon Denny, and many others.

You can explore Renaissance and Baroque periods, Māori and Pacific art, curatorial and museum studies, contemporary art and theory, cross-cultural representation, photography, and digital culture.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) comprises 24 courses across 3 years of full-time study (360 points/24 courses).

You must select two BA subjects as your two majors (The first and second major must be chosen when applying).

Secondary school qualifications

India: You need to have one of the following:

• 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 75 percent in the All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSC), Indian School Certificate (ISC), Karnataka, Maharashtra, and West Bengal State Board Examinations with a minimum of 70 percent in English.
• 12 years of schooling and an overall average of 80 percent in all other Higher Secondary State Board Examinations with a minimum of 75 percent in English.

China:

• The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) otherwise known as Gaokao. (Have a high school diploma or equivalent, Be in good health…) (Score required = 67%)

Tertiary qualifications

You can transfer from another tertiary institution if you meet these requirements.

• You need to have the following: One-year successful bachelor-degree level study at a recognized university (or similar institution) overseas.
• Grade required = GPE 2.4 (57%)
