Welcome! The Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo offers unique undergraduate and graduate programs covering the study of literature, rhetoric, professional writing, and digital media.

Conditional English language proficiency admission:
If you are applying to a graduate program, and have supplied an ELP test but are slightly below the required score, conditional admission may be offered. 

If you are applying with a sponsorship that includes funding for English language studies, conditional admission may be offered.


Academic background and requirement

  • An Honors Bachelor's degree in English, or its equivalent, with an average of at least 78% in English courses, and at least 75% overall.
  • Those applying to the program but holding Honors degrees that combine English and another discipline may be admitted at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. 2_ A Statement of Interest, no more than 500 words, explaining your reasons for applying to the program.
