Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Biomedical Engineering)

The Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Biomedical) develops a comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of biomedical engineering. 

By combining multidisciplinary learning with collaborative projects and industry experience, you will develop the knowledge and experiences to launch your career in this rapidly growing branch of engineering.
 

As a biomedical engineering student, you will learn from and collaborate with leading researchers across many engineering disciplines and medicine, biology and molecular biology.

The degree covers all aspects of biomedical engineering, and you could contribute to innovative discoveries within the fields of:

  • biomedical technology
  • biology
  • biomechanics
  • biomaterials
  • orthopaedic engineering
  • tissue engineering
  • medical regulation
  • bioelectronics
  • medical instrumentation
  • the computational simulation of biomedical systems.

You will complete a thesis in your fourth year. It involves designing, manufacturing and demonstrating an innovative biomedical engineering system collaborating with industry specialists and hospitals. 

As part of your degree, you will undertake the award-winning Professional Engagement Program enabling you to change your approach to learning through self-reflection and extra-curricular activities throughout your degree.

Academic background and requirement

Assumed knowledge

HSC Mathematics Extension 1, Physics and/or Chemistry and/or Biology. 

If you attempt engineering without this prior level of knowledge of Mathematics, you may experience difficulty, so you are strongly advised to undertake an appropriate bridging course. 

Science assumed knowledge is flexible depending on the specialisation chosen.

Applying for honours

This course has an integrated Honours program, with all students undertaking a research thesis in the final year.

This course has a mathematics course prerequisite.

Foundation program

 

You study Academic English Skills and 4 academic subjects each semester.

Once enrolled with the University of Sydney Foundation Program, you will receive a conditional offer to a degree at the University of Sydney.

All students must study English A and English B during the Foundation Program.

If your degree at the University has a University of Sydney prerequisite for mathematics, you must study Mathematics during the Foundation Program.

Keeping in mind the subjects recommended to you; you are welcome to choose your elective subjects.
