Program Highlights

The Mechanical Technician – Elevating Devices diploma program covers the in-class apprenticeship curriculum for students who may be looking to complete their apprenticeship. 

The diploma program at Mohawk College focuses primarily on:

• This program is accredited by the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA)
• Installation, maintenance and servicing elevating devices
• Regulatory and industry best practices
• Build an understanding of elevating device electrical, mechanical and hydraulics systems
• Graduates of this integrated technician-apprenticeship program are exempt from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skill Development from all of the in-school training portion of the Elevating Devices Mechanic apprenticeship program (636E).
• Blended theory classes that are face-to-face and on-line.

What you will learn:

• History of elevating devices
• Mechanical and electrical systems
• Operation, installation, maintenance and procedures for traction elevators, elevators and moving walkways
• Hydraulic systems
• Reading and interpreting engineering drawings. e.g. AutoCAD
• Machines and circuits including single phase circuits, transformers, 3-phase electrical systems, elementary control systems and electric machines
• Elevator hydraulic systems and installation
• Motors, generators, controls and AC drives
• Lifting devices for individuals with physical disabilities
• Circuit tracing
• Modernization and alterations for elevating devices

• A copy of Passport - Picture and Address Pages
• All Academic Transcripts - High school and higher
  • High School Transcripts/Mark Sheets and Completion Certificates
  • Degree/Diploma Transcripts/Mark Sheets and Completion Certificates
  • Notarized and translated into English
• English Proficiency Score Cards or equivalent (if applicable)
• Notarized Custodian Declaration (for those under the age of 18 by the start of the class)

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent
  • Grade 12 English, C or U or equivalent
  • Grade 11 Mathematics; C (MCT4C recommended) M or U or equivalent
  • Senior Physics SPH4C OR SPH4U recommended

Options are available for mature applicants.

• Mature applicants aged 19 and over
• Applicants who are not currently in secondary school

Mohawk recognizes that life changes people’s directions. That’s why Mature Students don't need to have completed a secondary school diploma to enter a Mohawk College program.

Mohawk welcomes students from many backgrounds:

• Many Mohawk students arrive after being away from school and/or in the labour force for one year or more
• Almost 1/3 of Mohawk students are aged 23 or over, and there are students from every generation.
• Mohawk considers a mature applicant to be anyone 19 years of age or older who is planning to attend a full or part-time program at Mohawk College.
• Adult learners are an important part of our Mohawk community.
• With various work and life experiences, adult learners contribute their valuable perspectives to classroom and training programs while simultaneously obtaining new knowledge and skills.
