Overview

Bachelor of Arts - Visual Arts - Art History (Honours)

Immerse yourself in the global world of art, architecture, art criticism and curatorial studies to create change at the intersections of visual art, society, and culture.

You will explore practical applications of museum and gallery studies off-campus with industry placements at established galleries like the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum.

The Visual Arts - Art History (BA) program at York curriculum focuses on modern and contemporary art, Canadian Art, Indigenous and settler art of the Americas, Asian art, western art and architecture, as well as art criticism and curatorial studies.

Beyond the first year of study, students may choose to concentrate their studies on global art history, modern and contemporary art, or curatorial studies.

All streams emphasize the relationship between visual art and its social contexts, including global cultural exchange. Students have hands-on access to original works of art to explore practical applications of museum and gallery studies.

Certificate in Public History

Students with a passion for public art may choose to complete the cross-disciplinary Certificate in Public History offered concurrently with York bachelor's degree.

The Certificate in Public History introduces students to the theory, methods, and practice of work in historical, heritage, and cultural institutions and a critical understanding of the production and presentation of historical knowledge for public audiences.
