Overview

Master of Tourism (MTour)

The Master of Tourism (MTour) at the University of Otago is a degree that can be completed in a 12-month period, starting either in February (semester 1) or July (semester 2).

It is an interdisciplinary programme that mixes cutting-edge taught courses with independent research.

The programme deals with core, contemporary, and emerging issues and is taught by some of the leading tourism, leisure, and hospitality researchers in the world.

The programme is designed to act as a means of enhancing the knowledge and skills of students seeking or wishing to enhance a career in the tourism industry or related areas and as a foundation for students seeking entry to a PhD programme.

Graduates of the MTour will have a detailed and high-level critical understanding of tourism, and related areas, as both an industry and social phenomenon.

They will also have a detailed and advanced grounding in pertinent research and presentation skills that enable them to actively participate in the tourism industry, associated governmental and non-governmental institutions, and/or academia to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Structure of the Programme

  1. Every programme of study shall consist of approved papers from the schedule of papers available for the degree of Master of Tourism to the value of 180 points.
  2. With prior approval from the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce), papers worth up to a maximum of 60 points in a relevant subject offered by another tertiary institution, may be granted transfer credit for equivalent paper(s) within the programme.
  3. A candidate shall, before commencing the investigation to be described in the dissertation, secure the approval of the Programme Coordinator concerned for the proposed course of the investigation.
