The Master of Applied Science (MAppSc) at the University of Otago is a 180-point, coursework postgraduate degree.
A candidate would normally be a graduate but the degree is also open to those with other relevant qualifications.
The MAppSc is designed for students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary program of study underpinned by science that delivers versatile skills relevant to multiple end-users.
Optional paths are available that emphasize commercialization, workplace-based projects, or independent study.
The MAppSc can be completed in 12 months or stages, providing flexibility for recent graduates and those currently employed.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Science (PGCertAppSc), Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science (PGDipAppSc), and Master of Applied Science (MAppSc) in Quantitative Genetics are designed to provide the necessary skills for employment in areas where quantitative genetic methods are applied.
These can include primary sector breeding programs (e.g. in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry), medical research, and gene resource management of endangered species.
These programs encourage critical thinking, develop analytical skills and broaden students’ understanding of New Zealand contexts.

STAT 435 Data Analysis for Bioinformatics, and QGEN 401 Quantitative Genetics and Improvement; and
either three approved papers at 400-level in STAT, MATH, or GENE ; APPS 597 Supervised Independent Study and APPS 598 Workplace-based Project;
