Master of Commerce (Advanced)

The Master of Commerce (Advanced) offers a pathway to PhD study specializing in accounting. 

Students with little background in accounting can still reach an advanced level of academic study. 

The program provides an advanced level of study in one or more accounting disciplines and requires the completion of research preparation coursework, and a research thesis in an accounting discipline.

The program is taught by research active academic staff. 

Students are exposed to professional and scholarly academic research in accounting, enhancing their academic competence. Students will also acquire research skills in accounting and will demonstrate the ability to undertake independent research.

Research Strengths

This degree has been accredited at AQF Level 9 with a significant component of Research. 

Courses in the program include substantial research-based assessments. Students are required to undertake a research method course and a research project worth 24 units. 

These courses include 100% research-based assessments.

Learning Outcomes

  • Integrate advanced theoretical and technical accounting knowledge in a business context, including issues in accounting research and research methods in accounting.
  • Exercise independent judgement to analyze and provide possible solutions to emerging and advanced accounting problems in complex contexts using where appropriate social, ethical, economic, regulatory, sustainability, governance and/or global perspectives.
  • Critically apply advanced theoretical, technical accounting knowledge and research-based skills to evaluate emerging and advanced accounting problems, and to conduct a research-based project.
  • Justify and communicate accounting ideas and theoretical issues to both specialists and non-specialists.

ANU College programs deliver pathways to ANU designed to help you successfully transition to undergraduate or postgraduate study. 

Academic English Preparation
Academic English Preparation (AEP) is a 10-week program focused on English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. 

AEP is designed to equip international students with skills and knowledge needed to live and work in Australia, and to successfully transition to other courses at ANUC. 

To enrol in AEP, you must have an IELTS of 5.0 (minimum 4.5 in each band) or an overall TOEFL IBT of 40 with a minimum of 12 in writing. 

Once enrolled, you must achieve a score of 60 per cent or more to successfully complete AEP. No additional IELTS is required to progress to Foundation Studies or ANU Access. 
ANU Access
ANU Access is a 10-week intensive program with a strong focus on academic English. 

To be eligible for ANU Access, you must have an overall IELTS of 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5) or an overall TOEFL IBT of 68 with a minimum of 18 in writing

A range of other English language tests are also accepted. Once you successfully complete the program you can enter your degree at ANU.
