Master of Environmental Science (Advanced)

Shape a sustainable future for our planet with the ANU Master of Environmental Science.

You’ll be studying at one of the top 10 universities in the world for environmental science, developing your breadth of knowledge in environmental science and its applications, and depth in aspects of one or more of the biological, earth and environmental or ecological environmental sciences.

The Advanced program incorporates up to a year of research with mentoring by a Supervisor and the production of a thesis.

Completing a Master of Environmental Science (Advanced), with a substantial research component, can also qualify you to apply for entry to a PhD program.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate both a broad knowledge base in the environmental sciences and depth of knowledge in aspects of one or more of environmental biology, environmental earth science, and environmental and ecological science
  2. Independently apply their advanced knowledge and analytical, research, teamwork, and oral and written communication skills in professional practice in the environmental sciences
  3. Effectively communicate knowledge and understanding in the environmental sciences to both specialist and non-specialist audiences
  4. Demonstrate that they have completed appropriate research training for further study

ANU College programs deliver pathways to ANU designed to help you successfully transition to undergraduate or postgraduate study. 

Academic English Preparation
Academic English Preparation (AEP) is a 10-week program focused on English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. 

AEP is designed to equip international students with skills and knowledge needed to live and work in Australia, and to successfully transition to other courses at ANUC. 

To enrol in AEP, you must have an IELTS of 5.0 (minimum 4.5 in each band) or an overall TOEFL IBT of 40 with a minimum of 12 in writing. 

Once enrolled, you must achieve a score of 60 per cent or more to successfully complete AEP. No additional IELTS is required to progress to Foundation Studies or ANU Access. 
ANU Access
ANU Access is a 10-week intensive program with a strong focus on academic English. 

To be eligible for ANU Access, you must have an overall IELTS of 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5) or an overall TOEFL IBT of 68 with a minimum of 18 in writing

A range of other English language tests are also accepted. Once you successfully complete the program you can enter your degree at ANU.


Academic background and requirement

Applicants must present a Bachelor degree or international equivalent in a cognate discipline with a minimum GPA of 5.5/7.0.

Applications for course credit

Applicants with a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 24 units (one semester) of credit. 

Applicants with a Graduate Diploma or Bachelor degree with Honours in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 48 units (one year) of credit.
