Overview

Master of Science (Advanced) in Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics

The Master of Science in Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics is a 2 year full-time (or equivalent part-time) degree that provides students with experience in the use of methods and tools to organize and analyze biological data: statistically, mathematically and computationally.

The course caters to a range of students including

(1) students who have come from an undergraduate biological degree, by providing the appropriate mathematical and programming skills;

(2) to students with a more quantitative undergraduate background, by providing the necessary background in biology and biological data and analyses.

Students also have the opportunity to learn about, and apply, techniques in client engagement and the real-world practice of consulting.

Finally, students will develop work on an original research project that builds on, and applies, their knowledge of quantitative biological data analysis.

The Master of Science in Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics (Advanced) can also lead to a PhD.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the mathematical and computational foundations of biological data analysis;
  • Formulate and apply appropriate quantitative methods to analyze biological data;
  • Interpret, synthesize and critically analyze published literature of relevance to quantitative biology and bioinformatics;
  • Advise, and provide assistance to others, on the appropriate use of techniques for the analysis of biological data;
  • Develop and execute an independent research project that builds on, and extends, knowledge of quantitative biological data analysis;
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of science in society;
  • Clearly communicate theory and results in both written and oral formats.

Academic English Preparation
Academic English Preparation (AEP) is a 10-week program focused on English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

AEP is designed to equip international students with skills and knowledge needed to live and work in Australia, and to successfully transition to other courses at ANUC.

To enrol in AEP, you must have an IELTS of 5.0 (minimum 4.5 in each band) or an overall TOEFL IBT of 40 with a minimum of 12 in writing.

Once enrolled, you must achieve a score of 60 per cent or more to successfully complete AEP. No additional IELTS is required to progress to Foundation Studies or ANU Access.
ANU Access
ANU Access is a 10-week intensive program with a strong focus on academic English.

To be eligible for ANU Access, you must have an overall IELTS of 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5) or an overall TOEFL IBT of 68 with a minimum of 18 in writing

A range of other English language tests are also accepted. Once you successfully complete the program you can enter your degree at ANU.
