Overview

Master of Arts in Music, Emphasis Ethnomusicology

The Master of Arts in Music with an emphasis on ethnomusicology is designed to educate scholars and performers to teach and engage with the shifting lines of inquiry and methodological debates that define the field.

The MA degree can accommodate interests in ethnomusicology’s wide range of geographic areas and intellectual issues.

UBC strongly encourages performance, and close interaction with related disciplines (anthropology, area studies, sociology, linguistics, etc.), as well as border crossing within music studies.

Students interested in designing a course of study integrating ethnomusicology with music theory, composition, or historical musicology are encouraged to inquire.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

The Faculty of Graduate Studies may extend a conditional offer of admission to a highly-qualified graduate applicant who does not quite meet the minimum English language proficiency requirement set by the graduate program to which the student has applied.

The student will proceed directly into the graduate degree program after successfully completing the prescribed terms of study in the ELI Intensive Academic English Program (or pre-approved, equivalent alternative).

To be eligible for the Condition Admission Program (CAP), the applicant must:

  • Possess a "first-class average" (or established equivalent) in a degree deemed as an eligible basis for admission, OR have academic qualifications that would have ranked them in the top 33% of students admitted to the graduate program to which they are applying, for the year before the date of their application;
  • have English language proficiency, demonstrated via an accepted test, that can reasonably be expected to be brought up to the standard required by the graduate program to which the student has applied by completing ELI (or accepted equivalent) training in no more than a year; and
  • be recommended for the CAP by a UBC graduate program.

Academic background and requirement

  • The applicant must ordinarily possess a B.Mus., B.S. or B.A. degree
  • A minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC)
  • No rigid prerequisites are specified, but a music major is recommended, including courses in world music cultures. Successful ethnomusicologists tend to be individuals with good stories to tell.
  • An application should demonstrate an interest in the practice and literature of ethnomusicology and curiosity about its place (and the place of music) in the history of ideas and cultural relations.
  • Predetermination of a focused research topic is not expected at this stage.
  • Admission is highly competitive, and a maximum of two students are admitted per year.

China:

  • The Bachelor's degree of at least four years of study
  • Overall average of B+ standing.

  • 16 on a 20-point scale
