Overview

Master of Food and Resource Economics

Exciting technological progress, global environmental pressures, and unprecedented demographic changes rapidly reshape the world’s food and natural resources systems.

As local issues become global and require multidisciplinary skills & knowledge, the world is increasingly demanding professionals who can analyze, design, and integrate business, economic, and policy variables that help governments, industry, and institutions create and operate better systems.

At the MFRE, you will be exposed to the issues and opportunities arising from this dynamic new world and equipped with the necessary skills to address them.

The MFRE is a 12-month master's program at UBC that blends aspects of an MBA and a MA in Economics

The program is completed over three terms: the first two comprise rigorous courses in multiple specialization areas; in the third one, you will enhance and consolidate your MFRE experience through a summer graduating project

This project can take the form of research, a consultancy project or an internship.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

The Faculty of Graduate Studies may extend a conditional offer of admission to a highly-qualified graduate applicant who does not quite meet the minimum English language proficiency requirement set by the graduate program to which the student has applied.

The student will proceed directly into the graduate degree program after successfully completing the prescribed terms of study in the ELI Intensive Academic English Program (or pre-approved, equivalent alternative).

To be eligible for the Condition Admission Program (CAP), the applicant must:

  • Possess a "first-class average" (or established equivalent) in a degree deemed as an eligible basis for admission, OR have academic qualifications that would have ranked them in the top 33% of students admitted to the graduate program to which they are applying, for the year before the date of their application;
  • have English language proficiency, demonstrated via an accepted test, that can reasonably be expected to be brought up to the standard required by the graduate program to which the student has applied by completing ELI (or accepted equivalent) training in no more than a year; and
  • be recommended for the CAP by a UBC graduate program.

Academic background and requirement

  • A minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC).
  • A bachelor’s degree in an area such as economics, agricultural economics or business that provides a solid background in economics

  • Statistical competency, at least one course in statistics (equivalent to LFS 252 or ECON 325 at UBC).
  • Introductory economic theory courses in both micro and macro-economic principles (equivalent to ECON 101 and 102 at UBC).
  • You have built on these introductory economic theory courses by, both:
    • Completing at least one more course in micro-economic theory at the intermediate level (equivalent to ECON301 or COMM295 at UBC).
    • Completing at least two additional courses at the intermediate level in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Food Economics, Resource Economics or economics-based Commerce courses.
  • Students lacking any of the above four competencies will need to fill these gaps before being admitted to the MFRE program. There is a place in the MFRE application form for you to explain how you will overcome these gaps in your background.
