Overview

Bachelor of Arts (Languages)

In this degree, you will learn from world-class educators and researchers and benefit from our state-of-the-art learning facilities, including the Multimedia Languages Lab where you can connect in real-time with native speakers from around the world.

You will also connect with the Research Centre for Languages and Cultures (RCLC).

There is also the opportunity for you to gain global experience as part of the Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience (full semester) or Professional Experience Program (part semester).

Under the guidance of world-class researchers, you will embark on an in-depth study of French, Italian, Japanese or English (for non-English speaking students). 

You will develop your proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in your chosen language, as well as your understanding of the related culture and society.

You will also be given the opportunity to immerse yourself in your chosen language and culture through exchange and in-country study programs. 

This degree allows you to select two majors ensuring you graduate with a broad knowledge of two areas of interest. 

You can choose your second major from the following:

You will also complete two core courses, four courses from a selected list of minors (also from the above list), and two electives.

 

This degree increases your employment prospects by enabling you to gain expertise in two different areas of interest.

Italian is the second most widely spoken language in South Australia, after English, and one of the most widely taught languages in the world. 

Approximately 63 million people in the world speak Italian.

Japanese is spoken by around 130 million people in Japan and is one of the most widely taught languages in South Australia.

Japan is one of the world’s largest economies and one of Australia’s most important trading partners.

Studying French, Italian and/or Japanese will give you direct access to speakers of those languages, and three of the most vibrant, high tech cultures in the world.

Language pathway (conditional offer) is available

Successful completion of the Centre for English Language at the University of South Australia (CELUSA) Academic English Program: Level 4 (AE4)

 

If you do not meet the English language entry requirements, you can successful completion of the Centre for the English Language at the University of South Australia (CELUSA) Academic English Program. 

 
If they successfully complete the AE program at an appropriate level, students applying to these institutions will not need to take IELTS or any other English language test. Depending on their English level upon commencement of the AE program and their required IELTS score for further studies, students will study for between 10 and 40 weeks.

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 program or an equivalent program in your home country or a recognised Pathway or Foundation Studies Program.

If you are an international student studying Year 12 in Australia you need to apply via the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC).

Successful completion of the Pre-University Certificate OR High School Diploma

 

Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements and essential requirements for admission:

 

Recent secondary education
Meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C- or equivalent.
AND

  • Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and achieve a competitive Selection Rank (ATAR), or
  • Complete secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
  • Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points

Applicants who have not achieved the Selection Rank required for automatic selection may be selected for any remaining places based on the grades of their year 12 subjects.
