Bachelor of Science - Chemistry

A Bachelor of Science with a chemistry major at Western Sydney University will prepare you to participate in the process of inquiry by contributing to it and using scientific knowledge to solve current problems. 

The Chemistry program provides a strong background in the key topic areas of contemporary chemistry, including: 

Aspects of chemical theory in analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, with a strong emphasis on practical laboratory skills and applications in contemporary research, industry and the environment. 

A research project is available to students in the final year of the degree, preparing them for a professional career in a wide range of chemistry-based industries. 

The degree allows for the completion of a second major or additional sub-majors and electives to diversify learning for future careers.

Graduates of this degree can look forward to career opportunities as research scientists, forensic scientists, or scientists in the environment, mining or manufacturing industries. 

Other opportunities can be found in the pharmaceutical industries, health and food industries, scientific and technical sales, and consumer affairs, or you can progress into pursuing a research or secondary teaching career.

Western Sydney University seeks to enhance student learning experiences by enabling students to engage in the culture, expectations and practices of their profession or discipline.  

This program includes placement or other community-based unpaid practical experience opportunities.

Academic background and requirement

Assumed Knowledge: Students should have at least two units of English, two units of science (any science), and two units of mathematics at year 12 equivalent.

China:

  • Successful completion of Gao San with an 80% average in 3 years.

India: 

  • Indian Higher Secondary School Certificate (State Boards): Successful completion of Higher Secondary Certificate with a pass of 70% in the best 4 core subjects
  • All India School Certificate (CBSE): Successful completion of AISCE (CBSE) with an overall GPA of 60% in the best 4 core subjects
  • Indian School Certificate (ISC): Successful completion of ISCE with an overall GPA of 60% in the best 4 core subjects

Iran:

  • Successful completion of a recognised foundation studies program, 1 year of university studies or completion of a qualification equivalent to an Australian AQF Certificate IV
